Abstract: Photogrammetry, which is the practice of determining the geometric properties of objects from photographic images, can be a potent and viable approach to structural deformation monitoring. Depending on the scale of the structure, the photogrammetric method whether aerial or terrestrial adopted should be able to reduce cost while retaining the potential for high precision and accuracy. To this end, the close range photogrammtric method is adopted in this research with compare with consumer's level digital camera and smart phone in built camera. Close range photogrammtry has an object to camera distance of less than 300 meters as well as being terrestrial. This is particularly suitable for the scope of this research. Engineering deformation monitoring requires techniques which can produce high precision and accuracy, reliable measurements at good temporal resolution and fast processing speed. Moreover, monitoring in civil engineering is generally considered to be labor intensive and financially expensive, and it can take significant effect to arrange the necessary human resources, transportation and equipment maintenance. Low cost, automated, photogrammetric techniques therefore have the potential to become routinely viable for the structural monitoring of civil structures in the future. This research is investigating the use of close range photogrammetry to monitor all stages of structure engineering, through dimensional control in construction to in-situ, and as built monitoring of the finished construct. In order to establish a low cost, generic structural monitoring system, a comprehensive content of the capability of close range photogrammetry and approach to be followed in this research is attached.
