Abstract: Photocatalytic activity of Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) has been intensively studied in recent years, and its effect on air pollutant removal has been fully explored. Recently, the application of TiO₂ to Eco-glass block has been realized. Eco-glass block, which makes use of recycled wasted glass (RG), provides a solution to the problem of large amount of wasted glass produced in Hong Kong; meanwhile, the incorporation of photocatalsyt TiO₂ into Eco-glass block helps to improve the air quality. In this study, the effects of different constituents that affecting the Eco-glass block's apparent color, on the air pollutant removal efficiency were examined by means of studying the NO removal efficiency of concrete surface layer. Results from this study showed that different color pigments (green, orange, red, yellow and black) had negative effects on the NO removal ability of Eco-glass block due to light transmission. In contrast, transparent cullet and white cement (WC) with Metakaolin (MK) and Ground granulated blastfurnace slag (GGBS) were found to significantly improve the NO removal effect of Eco-glass block. Moreover, the NO removal ability of Eco-glass block was found to be suppressed under sunlight irradiation. In addition, the replacement of traditional concrete aggregates by RG showed significant improvement in the NO removal ability, which increased with an increasing proportion of recycled glass. In conclusion, the air pollutant removal ability of Eco-glass block may be enhanced by use of transparent cullet, WC, MK and GGBS in fabrication.
