Abstract: There is an increasing trend in using prefabricated concrete components in the local construction industry. This is due to an enthusiasm for advance construction technology and a need to shorten the overall project time. In this report, different aspects of the components from the viewpoint of engineering such as review on local design practice will be discussed; the design standards will be studied; the suitability of structural system will be identified; and the connections configuration will be presented. Two construction projects are chosen as the case studies. The first case study is initiated from a private developer. Prefabricated concrete components are used in the hotel development. The second case study is related to a Hong Kong Housing Authority (HKHA) public housing project under the Private Sector Participation Scheme (PSPS) at Tin Shui Wai Area 111. Discussion on two different current statutory monitoring systems for the case studies, i.e. Buildings Department regulations and HKHA practice are drawn for reference. Besides, potential problems and impacts on management and planning of these two projects are reviewed and investigated. Merit overcoming conventional in-situ reinforced concrete construction in different aspects such as cost, time and environmental consideration are also evaluated. Hong Kong codes of practice, specifications and relevant design standards on prefabricated concrete components are reviewed and discussed in terms of structural design aspect. With cross reference to the prefabricated concrete components application, valuable information on the structural adequacy of both analysis and design are properly presented. Robustness of the prefabricated construction is also considered according to the structural systems adopted for the case studies. Finally, recommendation and conclusion are drawn to summarize the works done and identifying the trend of using prefabricated concrete components in the Hong Kong construction industry in view of the following concerned factors, i.e. safety, time, quality and environmental enhancement.
