Measurement of background ammonia and other pollutants in different places near roads in Hong Kongen_US
In Hong Kong, air pollution is a concern and it is particularly serious along the roadside. Different measures have been employed to reduce the level of air pollutant, and retrofitting the Euro II and Euro III buses with "selective catalytic reduction" (SCR) devices is one of the measures to deal with roadside nitrogen dioxide problem. However, there is the possibility of any leakage of ammonia as secondary pollution from SCR devices due to mechanical problem. In this dissertation, the levels of ammonia along the roadside and in the bus terminal, and also the air pollutant levels including particulate matters, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide and ozone along the roadside were investigated. Besides, the factors which can affect the measurement results were examined. The results indicate that ammonia was seldom detected and in only small amount, but the other pollutant levels were quite serious in the measurement locations when compared to the benchmark level in Hong Kong Standard, especially in Hong Chong Road in Hung Hom. Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that the Government should try to conduct more and stricter measures to reduce traffic emission, especially in the districts where the pollutant levels are high.en_US
