Abstract: This project focuses on crowd-powered expansion network structure with respect to human flesh search (HFS) event. There are four specific objectives set: (1) collecting data about crowd-powered expansion networks, especially about HFS events, (2) analyzing the data and describing the properties of structure, (3) visualizing the structure of crowd-powered expansion networks, and (4) discovering the change of network structure before and after the discussions. With these four objectives achieved, we can understand how crowd-powered expansion networks are built up and evolved according to different factors. To realize these objectives, we consider four factors in this dissertation and they are fast evolving, diversified participants, different SNS providers and information flow. Three cases are used to study these factors. The first case is Fudan University Scandal - Huangshan Incident Gate which is used to study the former two factors, i.e., fast evolving and diversified participants. The first factor is analyzed by five periodic structures and changing of two important point structures. The influence of the second factor is studied by structures of around thirty diversified participants before and after the event occurred. The second case is Southern China Tiger Event which is used to analyze the impact of different SNS providers. There are two SNS providers utilized in this part of our study, including Tianya and Baidu Tieba. This case illustrates the overall structure and important point structures of Tianya and Baidu Tieba and compares the structures influenced by different SNS providers. The last case is Yaan Earthquake which is not a HFS event but presents crowd-powered expansion network feature and it is used to study the information flow factor. In this case, users in different SNS are connected by information flow. Similarly, structure analysis for this case concludes the result structure and important point structure. In this report, after introducing various research works in the past decades, the methods to analyze crowd-powered expansion network structure of HFS events are presented. They include the data collection process, the structural network power and the visualization tool. The analyses of four different factors based on three cases are then represented. The findings can be summarized as follows. Firstly, the network structure of HFS events, with the time window divided into three periods, always undergoes significant changes in the second period. Secondly, diversified participants always build up closer relationships after an HFS event. Thirdly, different SNS providers always impact on network structure, especially in terms of centrality degree of the structure. Finally, different SNSs are connected by information flow of same topics and the whole structure presents more users but has lower degree and betweenness among users.
