Abstract: Sheet metal materials have played an important role in the building envelope structures for thousands of years. They are still used in many famous buildings that remain functional to date. With the development of the economics, metal building envelope systems are being widely adopted all over the world. However, many projects have been witnesses to different construction accidents, e.g., water leakage and metal roofs ripped open by wind. To ensure sufficient structural performance in a real project, a full-scale metal roof wind uplift resistance test should be conducted in both static and dynamic forms. However, this process is always time and money consuming, and a full scale-test is believed unsuitable for use in preliminary tests for product development or even for the preliminary understand of a new product. This study is an experimental base study that is part of a metal roofing long-term performance research program conducted to understand the behavior of standing seam roofs under wind-induced loads. This study aims to develop a new, simplified, and economical method of evaluating the wind-induced load carrying capacity of the connection and to increase the understanding of the failure mechanism of metal roofing panels. A total of twenty-one tests were performed to study the connection of the panel and clip under wind-induced loads. Nine tests for preliminary upstanding and twelve formal tests will be conducted in two separated test setup for comparisons. A simplified and economical panelclip connection test method for standing seam metal roof was developed in this study. Observations were made during the testing program, including wind uplift resistance, failure mode, and failure mechanism of the panels. The strengths and weaknesses of the three test methods were then summarized. Recommendations to improve the wind uplift resistance for further study were also presented. It is valuable for test and application of standing seam roofing structure.
