Abstract: Urbanization occurs as the main production of countries switch from agriculture to industry. In China, the New-type Urbanization comprises economic urbanization, population urbanization, land use urbanization and life quality urbanization. The demographics of the urbanization process are the foundation of all urban history. Nowadays, cities in Chinese Mainland has got to a rapid developmental stage of urbanization. Compared with the urbanization rate in 2002, the average urbanization rate has increased by nearly 35 percentage points to 52.57% and the total urban population has reached 712 million in 2012. The aim of this paper is to investigate the spatio-temporal dynamics and spatial distribution of economic urbanization in Guangdong province. By using statistics analysis methods in Minitab and spatial analysis methods tools in ArcGIS, Surfer and Geoda, the present paper takes 21 cities in Guangdong province as example and reports the tests of convergence, temporal changes and spatial distribution of several factors of economic urbanization that comprises the rate of urbanization and the proportion of primary industry production, secondary industry production and tertiary industry production from 2002 to 2012 and studies of their relationships. Moreover, we studied affecting factors of economic urbanization and spatial spillover phenomenon in this region by using spatial panel data model. The detection of spatial trend analysis and the trajectories of mean center’s movement of the rate of urbanization as well as industrial index illustrates the spatio-temporal changes in economic urbanization and convergence property of Guangdong province. The global convergence property is becoming stronger than before and the divides between cities is reducing. Cities in east wing and west wing of Guangdong province has the higher proportion of primary industry production and less contribution to economic urbanization; the spatial distribution of the proportion of secondary industry production is dispersed during these ten years and the main distribution cities distributes in GPRDUEC and east wing of Guangdong province; the distribution of tertiary industry production is comparatively reasonable because of the existence of superior cities and the promotion of surrounding areas by the superior cities; cities with higher rate of urbanization aggregate in GPRDUEC and are affected by the production of secondary industry production and tertiary industry. Moreover, economic urbanization is affected by many social factors mainly including transportation system, urbanization development level and level of innovation development.
