Abstract: Pollution in Hong Kong has become a very serious public issue. Although the government provides professional environmental quality indices such as the air quality health index, UV index, and human comfort index, these indicators are spatial restricted as the environmental data are taken from a small number of monitoring stations. Most citizens of the public have no means of measuring these indicators in particular places to assess whether their health is at risk. This study aims to develop a prototype system for personal mobile environmental sensing which is named integrated environmental monitoring system (IEMS). IEMS consists of three major components: (i) A low cost, small size, and portable environmental monitoring device (IEMD) that integrates environmental sensors including temperature, humidity, ultra-violet, noise and air pollution, (ii) A remote control panel (RCP) installed Smartphone with Bluetooth communication and GPS positioning, (iii) A centralized web server for data processing and data visualization on a website. The proposed prototype system provides several real-time environmental data with reasonable accuracy and an overall liveability Index which is called Urban Environmental Quality Index.
