dcterms.abstractA fibre Bragg grating (FBG) sensing network for monitoring the structural integrity of the Dongjiang water mains (DJWM) was developed by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in conjunction with the Water Supplies Department of Hong Kong SAR Government. The structural integrity of a segment of 200-meter-long glass-reinforced-plastic (GRP) pipes of the water mains has been monitored in terms of strain, temperature, and flow pressure for about one year. A database has been established for statistically analysing the structural performance of the GRP pipes under different conditions. This paper is devoted to the statistical analysis of the monitoring data with the expectation to recognize the performance patterns of the GRP pipes. Firstly, the correlations of the data acquired by sensors deployed at different locations along the pipes are investigated for two purposes: 1) to examine the spatial relationship between different measurement points, and 2) to recognize key positions/cross-sections along the GRP pipeline. Secondly, the time histories of the measured strain, temperature and pressure at key cross-sections are analysed, and some irregularities are identified during the analysis and listed in this paper. Finally, the correlations between measured parameters acquired at the key positions/cross-sections are analysed over a long time period to obtain the temporal performance pattern. If the performance curves about the GRP pipes in later days are not coincident with the formulated patterns after excluding environmental influential factors, anomaly in either sensor or structural integrity is alarmed, and further inspection action is made to identify potential structural defect.en_US
