Design of a multimedia object streaming protocolen_US
In recent years, there has been growing interest in using streaming techniques for delivering multimedia presentations such as lecture presentations over the Internet. For example, the Real Time Streaming Protocol (RFC2326) has been proposed for managing on-demand delivery of real-time data in a client/server-based environment and there are many video streaming products available in the market (e.g. the RealPlayer). In this dissertation, we consider a streaming multimedia presentation over the Internet. The multimedia presentation is assumed to be composed of multimedia objects with known play time. For simplicity, we assume that the download time for each object can also be determined based on the traffic situation on the Internet. Given these assumptions, we study the problem of determining the optimal time to start a presentation such that it can be played in a seamless manner (i.e. without interruption). We formulate a mathematical model to investigate the problem and solve it by means of three different algorithms. The algorithms are compared and some real lecture presentations are analyzed with the mathematical model to determine the optimal start time. Finally a prototype is built by using Java to show the basic functions of the object streaming protocol and its application.en_US
