Performance analysis of liquid desiccant dehumidification systemen_US
Air conditioning is one of the major energy consumers in Hong Kong. A large proportion of the energy is used especially for latent load which contributed by the hot and humid subtropical climate in Hong Kong. Traditional vapour compression system is not efficient in treating latent load in its part load condition and usually results in a downgrade in thermal comfort. In recent years, liquid desiccant dehumidification system has being developed and studied to be an efficient alternate in treating latent load. The ability of separating sensible load and latent load make this system a more effective and energy efficient way in handle air conditioning load in building. In this study, the aim is to investigate the performance of the liquid desiccant dehumidification system in Hong Kong’s subtropical climate and find the ways to improve and optimize the performance. A steady state mathematical model together with a program software, FORTRAN, are used to perform simulations based on Hong Kong climate. Varies cases and scenarios are simulated in order to investigate various operation conditions. Variables consisted of both air side and solution side. Results generated are observed and analyzed. Based on the investigated results, influential factors to the system performance are found and optimal operation for Hong Kong situation is addressed. The results show that a good design and monitor on the solution side is the key to optimize the system performance. Among various parameters, solution temperature is found to be the factor with largest influence to Hong Kong situation. Others are the solution concentration and solution mass flow rate. Operation strategies have also been addressed based on the simulation results and previous literature. Further studies on refining the mathematical model are recommended. Furthermore, an experiment rag is recommended to perform experiment in order to obtain real world operation data. This could strengthen theoretical results generated from simulations and enhance the studies on influential factors affecting the system performance. So as to further optimize the operation in Hong Kong situation.en_US
