| dcterms.abstract | The purpose of this dissertation is to study the dynamics of the Filipino Migrant Entrepreneurs in Hong Kong and link it with the Displacement Theory of Donald Kuratko. The findings indicate that Filipino females are more inclined to start a business venture than their male counterparts. It could be due to the role of males as breadwinners, by starting a business venture males are risking their livelihood. On the other hand, females can rely to their husbands for capital and know-how. Females that are married to foreign nationals have started businesses earlier than the females married to Filipino males. A survey of Filipino residents (excluding Filipino domestic helpers) living in Pui O, Lantau Island indicates that only 5 out of 100 are self-employed. Migrant Filipinos in Hong Kong are similar to their United States counterpart, in which the level of self-employment is low. Filipinos are more inclined to seek employment in the labor market. Displacement: political, economic, cultural played a major part in initiating the move to self-employment for most respondents. | en_US |
