dcterms.abstractThe application of power line as a medium to construct a transmission system can provide an easy and reliable means of communication in an office. In a typical office, a single-phase low voltage power line, i.e. 220V power line, is used as a main power supply. Moreover, the length of the power line is seldom more than 100m. This dissertation is mainly focused on the feasibility of using the power line as a medium to transmit digital data within a small office. The investigation is divided into three parts. The first part is to study the characteristics of the AC source which includes the harmonics of the source. The second part is to investigate the characteristics of the power line. It includes the line loss, bandwidth and the reflected wave on the power line. The final part is to study the factors that affect the transmission rate on the power line. The main factors are the carrier frequency, length of power line, data rate, carrier-to-noise ratio and the environment of office. The dissertation includes the design of measurement equipment. This measurement equipment is designed in order to measure the Bit Error Rate ( BER ) during the experiment. Moreover, the feasibility of high speed data transmission is discussed on the dissertation.en_US
