Abstract: Nowadays composite materials are widely used in the world. They are made from two or more different materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties, when combined, can have new and more excellent physical or chemical characteristics other than the constituents. In the history of the development of human beings, people never stop being inspired by the nature. Aircrafts from birds and radars from the bets are good examples of this kind of behaviors, which is called “biomimetic. The “Self-healing fiber reinforced composite that discussed in this dissertation is an excellent example of biomimetic. It is inspired by self-healing system of animals. “Self-healing fiber-reinforced composites has structural incorporated ability to repair its own damages caused during usage, which just like animals can heal the wounds with their own blood. A fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) can obtain self-healing ability by embedding hollow glass fibers, which are filled with “healing agents, between some of the layers alternatively. Those “healing agents actually determine the healing ability of the self-healing composite. In this dissertation, glass-fiber reinforced composites are chose as the foundation and 2-parts-resin (GY251&HY956) is chosen as the healing agent. The healing mechanisms are discussed. And the design and manufacturing of the self-healing composites are also discussed. Tensile strength is one of those main properties of material, which presents how strong a material can be. In this dissertation, to estimate the healing ability, tensile testing is chose to test the recovery of their tensile strength after healing.
