Abstract: In the run up to 1997, many listed companies in Hong Kong have aggressively expanded their investments in foreign countries. In this study, a market based model is applied to find out whether the selected listed Hong Kong companies active in overseas investments did create added benefits for their shareholders. The results indicate that selected companies' could not bring in significant benefits to their shareholders during the study period. But, the supplementary review provides some preliminary evidence to support that international diversification can reduce the risks facing the Hong Kong companies in a volatile environment. Apart from quantitative statistical review, individual sample companies' background, strategy and performance have been reviewed and summarized in the report. Various key negative factors affecting the effectiveness of sample companies' international diversification strategy have been identified. Findings reveal that there are costs and risks associated with international diversification even though the strategy itself is regarded as a risk minimization tool. The decision to go abroad is a key strategic change for many Hong Kong companies, and thus management of the companies are suggested to carry out critical evaluation before making such decision. Recommendations for successful implementation of international diversification strategy are given.
