Abstract: Compact fluorescent lamps and tubular linear fluorescent lamps are commonly used to replace incandescent lamps to aid in energy conservation in commercial and domestic lighting applications in recent years. Unlike the incandescent lamps, magnetic or electronic ballasts are necessary for the operation of fluorescent lamps. This dissertation evaluates the performance of the compact fluorescent lamps and linear fluorescent lamps, which are market available in Hong Kong, under various operating conditions that may be encountered in Hong Kong. Lighting designers may make reference to the testing results when designing their lighting system. Laboratory measurements have been conducted to evaluate the performance of different lamp/ballast combinations and presented in this dissertation. The lamp/ballast were placed in a tailor made environmental chamber and arranged to operate under different ambient temperatures and operating power supply voltages. The measured results indicate that the effectiveness of lamp/ballast in terms of lighting output and electrical characteristic (i.e. power consumption, harmonic distortion, etc.) are influenced by many factors which include different combinations of lamp/ballast types, surrounding temperature, electrical power supply source and the characteristic of the ballast circuit. It also reveals that the performance of the fluorescent lamps varies greatly from one to the others. Furthermore, it discusses the possible reasons for these results and suggests factors need to be taken into consideration when choosing fluorescent lamp/ballast. A piece of technical overview is also included in Chapter 2 of this dissertation to explain the basic operating principle of fluorescent lamps for easy reference.
