Abstract: Nowadays, fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are widely used in miscellaneous high performance applications due to their beneficial advantages such as high specific strength and good chemical resistance. Whereas, current FRP composites with both thermosets and thermoplastics used as matrices material are suffering from different shortages. Commonly, thermosetting plastic is lack of recyclability and formability because of the highly cross-linking structure and thermoplastics are hard to be processed due to high melt viscosity. A newly developed cyclic butylene terephthalate (CBT) resin, which is a thermoplastic that can be processed like thermosetting, is expected to be a promising alternative to solve this dilemma due to the properties including ultra-low melt viscosity, green, rapid polymerization process with no chemical emission, and very little heat generation. Manufacturing process of the CBT resin based prepreg was determined. In this study, effects of changing the content of catalyst and also the process parameters to the mechanical properties and also the polymerization time of prepreg will be studied to optimize the best procedure of fabricating thermoplastic prepreg. In order to manufacture the prepreg automatically, a prepreg machine is specially developed. This machine contains 3 systems, heating system, mechanical system and electrical system. Additionally, manufacturing process of the thermoplastic composites with the continuously reinforced CBT resin made by prepreg was experimented by hot press molding. The concentration of the catalyst is changed and the fabrication process parameter is also changed in order to find out the optimized parameters. Therefore, the mechanical properties of composite made by different layers prepreg were investigated. The tests include drop weight impact, tensile test and bending test. After analyzing the result from all the experiment, it can be concluded that all the test result showed that the tensile strength, flexural strength and impact resistance is increasing as the composite layer increased.
