dcterms.abstractThe interaction of a shock and individual drop, yielding the consequent aerodynamic breakup of the liquid droplet, poses a fundamental and challenging twophase flow problem. This dissertation summarizes the experimental design, manufacture and calibration of a shock tube apparatus to study the deformation and breakup regimes of millimetre-scale liquid droplets in the high speed airstream behind a shock wave. With the high-speed data acquisition system and the specially designed drop injector device, one man can fully operate this shock tube to get reliable result repeatability.This two-diaphragm shock tube is a round to square type, use schlieren method to visualize the drop breakup phenomenon conducted in the 80 X 80 mm crosssectional driven region. For now, experimental images are presented for the water droplets with diameter of 3.5 mm and shock wave Mach numbers ranging from 1.2 to 1.5 in the atmospheric air, which is in the range of the stripping-type breakup mode. On the enhanced experiment images, the effect of the RayleighTaylor instabilities is very significant.Further, integrating with vacuum system, and using different liquids such as silicone oils, various glycerol mixtures, etc., this shock tube apparatus can adjust the ranges of We (-400-28400), Oh (-0.002-50) and Re (-6300-113000). Extensive experiments will be conducted to provide the database for CFD code validation.en_US
