Skill competencies required for mid level garment merchandising managersen_US
The Hong Kong garment industry is undergoing the structural change. Mid Level Merchandising Managers are standing on the front line to meet this challenge. What skill competencies will they need to possess in order to cope with this challenge? What will be their survival niche and how they can further develop themselves in their career life? This study was trying to identify the required competencies as perceived by both Mid Level Garment Merchandising Managers and their Senior Managers as important for their post now and in the next two years. Due to the limited resources and research interest, only merchandising managers in the import/export oriented departments/companies were included in the study. Different kinds of competencies were explored and grouped into three types, including Core (Apparel-related), Supporting, and Generic Competencies. Core Competencies were the competencies related to apparel like Product Design, Costing and Quality assurance Supporting Competencies defined as disciplines which managers were expected to take course. Examples included Marketing Knowledge and Foreign Language. Generic Competencies were the skills which not limited to particular industry but to managers in general. They were including Leadership Skill and Communication Skills. Tasks which should be done more/less in next two years were identified in this study. Mid Level Merchandising Managers were suggested to spend more time in Budgeting and Planning, Exploring Markets, Promotion, Inter-Departmental Meeting, Departmental Meeting, Preparing Quotation, Product Design, Supervising Subordinates, and Sourcing. On the other side, they were suggested not to increase the frequency of reporting to their supervisor. They were also suggested to reduce their effort in Meeting the Clients, involving in Production Planning and Answering Enquires. For the Core Competencies, they were suggested to improve skills in Product Design and Costing. For the Supporting Competencies, Computer Knowledge, PRC Knowledge, Law Knowledge and Mandarin would be more essential to improve. For the Generic Competencies, they would have a long list to improve including Personal Drive, Planning, Team Building, Communication, Leadership, Customer Concern and Result Orientation. The importance of specific competencies would be changed with time. Mid Level Managers were suggested to keep a regular competencies appraisal together with their supervisors, so to identify the needs to improve.en_US
