Abstract: This research project aimed to elicit the good practices of a successful and popular MALL app Duolingo and investigate the possibility of translating these good practices into a language classroom where digital resources may not be available. A survey had been distributed via a few different online platforms to gather responses from users of Duolingo and have highlighted the reward system as one of the engaging factors behind Duolingo's success in keeping users motivated to learn. A case study has been formed with data gathered from the survey to implement the reward system into a language classroom and was received with positive results. The implement of a game-like reward system in combination with a progress report, participants have reported to feel more competitive and engage with the class and material. Feedback gathered from interviews with respondents of the survey and participants of the case study have shown the importance of handling motivation differently throughout the different stages of the learning progress. An explicitly structured reward system would be a beneficial addition to many traditional language classrooms to boost learner engagement and motivation and improve learner performance.
