Abstract: In practical design of trusses, the member force is determined using a pinned truss analysis. However, in accordance with the recommendation of a number of national design codes, the effective length not necessarily equal to the member true length can be assumed in member sizing and design. This represents an inconsistence that the analysis assumption is violated in the member design. Strictly speaking, if an effective length is assumed in design, a certain degree of joint flexibility has been implicitly implied in the connection, leading to a transfer of moment between members. This moment will further affect the actual design of a member when the combined stress formula embodied in several national design codes is utilised. This dissertation is aimed at incorporating the design assumption into an analysis program, with due allowance of nonlinear effects. The connection stiffness is determined on the basis of an assumed effective length and incorporated in an analysis program. A computer program relating the assumed effective length to the connection stiffness is developed in this respect. The rotational restraint implicitly assumed in selecting a particular effective length ratio is computed by this sub-program and then included in a modified analysis program, GMNAF, allowing for geometrical nonlinearity for accurate studies of the behaviour of a number of trusses. Further, the moment transferred is allowed for in the member capacity check. The design capacities of trusses with different connection stiffness reflected in the member effective length are studied.
