| dcterms.abstract | China has been striving to transform itself from a traditional labor- and resource-driven economy to an innovative human-capital- and knowledge-driven economy. The Chinese government has put entrepreneurship at the top of its agenda to ensure sustainable GDP growth. Drawing on the creative capital model (Florida, 2002), this research explores the determinants of entrepreneurship, and whether and how entrepreneurship can promote economic development in China. Data from 30 provincial areas in China from 2008-2012 shows the geographic distribution of talent and entrepreneurs in China and how entrepreneurship is influenced by factors such as human capital and creative capital, technology, innovation, R&D, venture capital, university systems, and openness of society. In contrast to findings from developed western economies, the data from China provide no evidence that entrepreneurship has a positive relationship to regional economic growth. This dissertation explores the reasons for this surprising finding and provides a rich analysis of its implications for local governments that are encouraging entrepreneurship in an attempt to ensure regional economic growth. | en_US |
