Abstract: It has long been a problem in conservation of easel paintings that comparison between multi-spectral images with each other is an extreme tedious and difficult task and the images of each technique in the technical examination of the painting are not compatible with one another. Furthermore, condition documentation on a large collection of paintings in a typical museum or gallery cannot be coped with by the existing manual system as the size of collection increases beyond its capacity. A system of hardware setup and software modules were developed to tackle the problem of condition documentation for conservation of easel paintings with the aid of computer and recent advance in imaging hardware and image processing techniques. An automatic mosaicing module for assembly of images was developed with special emphasis on different similarity measures between each sub-image. Discussion of future enhancement work to be done are also given. It is demonstrated that even with such low cost hardware as today's typical PC, the details of painting surface can be recorded and processed with very high resolution comparable to those expensive systems.
