Abstract: Natural ventilation is growing in popularity as a low-energy cooling strategy. The current study uses a common Computational Fluid Dynamics (hereafter, CFD), ANSYS Fluent, to simulate cross ventilation through an atrium and analyse the air flow patterns and temperature distribution. This study simulates passive cooling for an atrium for ventilation, including heat loads and radiation loads in the atrium. To expand on prior research into natural ventilation in a full scale, four different cases were simulated. The influence of ventilation strategies were investigated and determined the optimum outdoor temperature for the atrium for natural ventilation by CFD, and the predicted results meet the thermal comfort for the customer needs. It found out that under certain circumstances the chiller could be turned off when the outdoor temperature is below 21°C with wind speed passing through the opening no less than 1.5msˉ¹.
