Abstract: Illumination is one of the most energy consumption sources in underground space. Daylight represents the sustainable source of lighting in the interior of the building so it will be energy-efficient and environmentally friendly if we better develop and apply daylight resource. The application of tubular daylight device (TDD) is a useful mean of introducing daylight which includes diffuse and direct light into underground & deep space, which is also regarded as a feasible way to improve illumination quality indoor. In Hong Kong, daylight resource is relatively rich due to its location in tropical area with the annual average global horizontal illuminance is about 37825 lx. However, most of the underground buildings, like MTR stations, still utilize the traditional lighting devices, which are of relatively high energy consumption. In order to calculate the efficiency (the ration of the output lumen of the TDD to the total exterior sky lumen) in terms of time series and the output illuminance of TDD, a proved mathematic model based on daylight coefficient computational method (DC) was presented in this study. Meanwhile, because of mountains of high-rise buildings in Hong Kong, shading effects from nearby buildings should also be considered. Thus, computer simulation based on Lady-bug tools and Matlab would be implemented for an energy-saving analysis, including sunlight hour analysis, shading mask analysis, spatial daylight autonomy (DLA), annual efficiency and output illuminance of TDD, of Central Station in Hong Kong using TDDs based on Hong Kong climate data of daylight, clearly demonstrating the considerable energy saving potential of applying TDD. On the other hand, In order to further study TDDs features of energy saving, the energy-saving potential of TDD using in LUJIAZUI station in Shanghai has also been analyzed and final results of these 2 stations would be compared between them, showing that the performance of energy saving would be better in low altitude districts because of higher solar altitude angle relative to TDD.
