An expert system for designing hydrographic surveys in Hong Kongen_US
Hydrographic Survey (HS) is the art of measuring the shape and size of the seabed for clients' use. For each survey request, the survey methodology has to be designed to meet user's requirements. Each job requires professional knowledge of hydrographic equipment, survey methodology, understanding client's job requirements as well as working experience. Due to the limited resources available, the design process in practice is unable to meet increase in the scope and scale of survey request. The aim of this project is to design and build an expert system Design Tools for Hydrographic Surveys (DTHS) to provide quality designs of survey methodology for preliminary planning of hydrographic survey tasks. The system is expected to model and perform the problem-solving behaviour of a professional hydrographic surveyor in designing the survey methodology. Expert system shell KAPPA-PC is used to develop the system. Fuzzy rules and fuzzy inference engine are programmed within the shell and the graphic user interface is designed to enhance the user operation. This has been verified and validated by life cases. System tuning has been performed to optimize the correctness of the product. DTHS is the first Design Tool built in Hong Kong for the hydrographic surveying profession. The research will give an indication of the possibility of using expert systems in some well-known and structured problem domains. It has been anticipated that the standard/quality of the hydrographic survey services can be improved and maintained to a required standard with the aid of the expert system.en_US
