Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand the approach and process towards innovation implementation in the hotel industry in Thailand. The investigation focuses on both international chain and independent hotels. The study also intends to cover the challenges of innovation implementation, resolution planning and lessons learned. Design/methodology/approach: This thesis uses a qualitative approach based on in-depth interviews. The primary data collection is to be conducted with a sampling unit of approximately five international chain hotels and five independent properties in Bangkok province, Thailand. The perspectives of hotel management on the approach and process towards innovation implementation and its challenges will be investigated. Theoretical implications: This thesis aims to contribute the following: 1) it proposes the best framework or model on the approach/process of innovation implementation for independent hotels to cope with international chain hotels in Thailand; and 2) it adds to the knowledge on innovation implementation and on how international chain and independent hotels handle challenges. Practical implications: The results of this thesis aim to provide managerial guidelines and a framework for innovation implementation within the hotel industry. The study also aims to provide a direction and a clear process for their future development in innovation implementation, particularly for independent hotels in comparison with international chain hotels. The challenges, resolution planning and lessons learned will be a practical preparatory study for all hotels to consider when planning to implement any innovation. Originality/value: This thesis is the first empirical comparative study to be conducted on innovation implementation in both international chain and independent hotels within the hotel industry in Thailand.
