Influences of sharing economy on the hospitality industry in China : the hoteliers' perspectivesen_US
In recent years, there has been a great trend towards sharing, a new business model mostly driven by the rapid development of information and communication technology, changing values, urbanization, hyper-consumption, pollution and poverty. This innovative sharing model has significant implications to traditional industries in general and hospitality sector in particular in terms of host-guest relationship, supply flexibility, and memorable customer experiences. However, the specific influences of sharing economy on the hotel industry have not been adequately examined due to many reasons. For example, although many hoteliers have begun to realize that the sharing accommodation is affecting their business, it is hard to quantify its effects. Moreover, studies on hospitality should be conducted from a social lens rather than merely a commercial transaction perspective. The humanness deeply rooted in hospitality is also embedded in sharing economy. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the influences of sharing economy on the hotel industry from hoteliers' perspectives in China. A qualitative method of in-depth interview is adopted. A conceptual framework for exploring sharing economy influences on the hotel industry is also discussed. If the threats and opportunities embraced by the hotel industry are well understood, hoteliers could effectively respond to this emerging business system by updating their marketing activities. It is expected that this study contribute to supplementing the hospitality literature by bridging the gap existing in sharing economy in this industry in China pertinent to marketing and management.en_US
