A pilot study on a speech therapy assistant program in a district hospitalen_US
The use of assistants or support personnel in healthcare setting is not uncommon. Many professions use assistants to better utilise human resources as well as to contain rising healthcare cost. Nonetheless the use of Speech Therapy Assistant has never been established locally. This study reviewed the need of supportive personnel to take up the less complex and routine duties under the supervision of the professional Speech Therapist. By implementing the pilot Speech Therapy Assistant Program in a local district hospital, the study has found that such scheme is effective in terms of increasing the throughput per Speech Therapist from 193.50 to 254.17 attendances (p < 0.05), as well as decreasing the average cost per attendance from $251.08 to $206.21 (p < 0.05). Supervising Speech Therapists and the patients were satisfied with the service after the Speech Therapy Assistant pilot program. Other implications regarding the use of Speech Therapy Assistant including training, accrediting and supervising are considered, as well as the potential paradigm shift in job allocation and skill mix for the profession and support personnel at the corporate level is further discussed.en_US
