dcterms.abstractThis dissertation is initiated to reconsider the suitability of current seismic design for highway bridges in Hong Kong. In construction of bridges in Hong Kong, both wind load and seismic load have been considered in accordance with the Structural Design Manual for Highways and Railways issued by Highways Department of Hong Kong. According to the code of practices, the design ground peak acceleration is 0.07g (g is the gravity acceleration) which is underdesigned compared with the recent researches. The estimated ground peak acceleration in Hong Kong is about 0.08g (GEO report No. 16, 1992) and O.1Og in Chinese seismic zoning map. In order to investigate the adequacy of the current seismic design in Hong Kong, the reference to two other national codes of practices, the Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges issued by American Association of State Highway and Transportation Official (AASHTO) used in USA and the Draft of Anti-seismic Design Code for Highways used in China had been included in the scope of this dissertation. The seismic loads obtained from each code had been studied and compared with each other. The effects of span length of the superstructure and the height of substructure, e.g. piers, on the performance of bridges under seismic loads were studied and illustrated with design examples. In the study, the results reveal that highway bridges in Hong Kong with slender columns have sufficient strength to resist the major earthquakes. However, for the bulky short columns, the seismic forces using current Hong Kong practices was under estimated compared with AASHTO and Chinese Code. Moreover the reinforcement detailing design in the current design practice is inadequate compared with AASHTO and Chinese Code. A consensus on appropriate seismic design procedures for designing highway bridge in Hong Kong was urgently required.en_US
