Abstract: The aggregated electricity consumption in Hong Kong is high which is around 43000 GWh. To reduce the electricity consumption, regulating indoor temperature will be used as the solution. To assess thermal comfort for human in residential building, this project attempts to find out the neutral temperature in natural ventilated space and optimal indoor set-point in air-conditioned space by using questionnaire. This field study was conducted during mid-season and winter in 2020 and 2021, also part of spring in Hong Kong. The objective is to balance between human response, outdoor temperature and electrical consumption. Total 79 physical data and subjective questionnaires was collected in 19 flats. Neutral temperature is found from two different approaches. When neutral temperature was found by using thermal sensation vote, the neutral temperature was 25.62°C and 25.8°C for natural ventilated space and air-conditioned space respectively. Clothing insulation for both of them was 0.4 clo. When neutral temperature was identified by highest probability of acceptance, the neutral temperature was 26.3°C with clothing value of 0.52 clo and 24.8°C with clothing value of 0.4 clo for natural ventilated space and air-conditioned space respectively. The neutral temperature in Hong Kong was slightly higher than that in other countries with subtropical climate. In natural ventilated space, adaptive model is used, thus occupant have opportunities to react with different response. 90 % of occupants can accept the air temperature ranged from 23.3°C to 27.93°C which was 1 to 1.5°C wider than thermal comfort range in air-conditioned space. The preferred temperature range in natural ventilated space was 24.5°C to 26.9°C. Moreover, the characteristic of average daily electrical consumption can be defined by using tariff. Finally, average 6.25 units per day of energy can be saved by omitting the use of air-conditioner while average 0.19 units per day of energy can be saved by increasing 1°C of air-conditioner temperature.
