| Abstract: | This study employs a corpus-based critical discourse analysis to explore gender representation in online dating profiles on Douban. It investigates how self-profiles vary by gender and what these variations reveal about evolving gender perceptions and expectations in modern Chinese society. Analyzing over 1.1 million words from 4,052 users, the research identifies significant gender differences in themes such as education, appearance, financial situation, hobbies, and relationship goals. Men emphasize financial stability and family relationships, reflecting traditional provider roles, while women highlight physical appearance and specify relationship expectations, indicating societal pressures on female beauty and relationship dynamics. However, contemporary trends show men increasingly valuing emotional openness, personal interests, and inner qualities, while women focus on educational achievements, professional accomplishments, and equality in relationships. These findings underscore a complex interplay between traditional and modern gender norms, offering insights into the shifting landscape of gender roles in digital dating within Chinese society. Future research could expand on these findings by exploring non-heterosexual profiles and non-verbal cues to provide a more comprehensive understanding of gender representation in online dating. |
