An evaluation of the effectiveness of area cartogramen_US
dcterms.abstract"Cartogram is a presentation of statistical data in geographic distribution on a map." (Tobler, 2005) It is a transformed map in which regions (or lengths) are resized relative to their data. Cartogram has been considered as an effective visualization tool for statistical data. Nowadays, many methods for cartogram have been published and quickly applied in many fields. Therefore, whether cartogram is effective needs to be evaluated. This study aims at evaluating the effectiveness of cartogram for visualizing spatial data. In this study, two comparisons have been conducted. The first comparison is between cartogram and thematic map. In this case, thematic maps are used as benchmark. This comparison is to test the effectiveness of cartogram in an absolute sense. The second comparison is between different types of cartogram methods. A set of data are used to generate cartogram with different cartogram methods. This comparison is to test the effectiveness in a relative sense. Two types of data are used in this study. They have different characteristics and are used for different purposes. One is for quantitative description and the other is for qualitative description. From the limited technique carried out in this study, some conclusions are made as follows: Cartogram is more effective in qualitative description, but is less effective in quantitative description. Different cartogram methods have different effectiveness in qualitative description and quantitative description individually. In qualitative description, non-contiguous cartogram's effectiveness > contiguous cartogram's > Dorling cartogram's > pseudo cartogram's; and in qualitative description, pseudo cartogram's effectiveness > contiguous cartogram's > Dorling cartogram's > non-contiguous cartogram's.en_US
