Abstract: Smoke control design in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) was critically reviewed. Updated international standards, design guides, codes, regulations and the local practice of smoke control systems design were surveyed. Investigation and comparison of the local prescriptive codes and requirements with respect to type of occupancies, smoke ventilation rate, air flow path, reliability of power source, equipment, materials, construction and acceptance test were carried out. Application of performance-based fire codes or 'engineering approach' to maintain higher standards of fire safety was addressed. Results were then applied to cases allowing flexibility for situations where complying prescriptive requirements are not practical. Various document on smoke control system design currently referred to were outlined. Differences between the latest practice of the international guides and the minimum requirements of the local prescriptive codes were investigated, evaluated and compared. Finally, design data for different calculation methods were assessed. Actual impacts on buildings when applying the latest codes in smoke control system design for buildings were analysed.
