Correlation between air pollution and metallic corrosionen_US
Air pollutants, especially acidic particles in the atmosphere, can cause adverse health effects on human being, and destruction of ecosystem and infrastructure. This study aimed to build up the correlations between air pollutants, particularly acidic particles, and metallic material corrosion. To achieve the purpose, atmospheric corrosion tests of selected materials and field measurement of air pollutants were simultaneously carried out at a polluted urban site, i.e. Tung Chung (TC) in west of Hong Kong from March to June, 2012. In particular, this study for the first time employed our own-developed iron nano-film detectors and Ultrafine Diffusion Monitor (UDM) to collect ultrafine acidic particles, when the selected materials were exposed to ambient air. The ultrafine particles collected by the detectors were imaged and counted using an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). To understand the relationship between the measured air pollutants and the corrosion of materials, correlation analysis was undertaken between gaseous pollutants / acidic ultrafine particles and corrosion rates of materials. The results indicated that gaseous pollutants i.e. sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen oxides (NOx), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), ozone (O₃), and particulate-phase pollutants i.e. PM₂.₅, PM₁₀ and acidic particles had close correlations with corrosion rate of different metallic materials.en_US
