Abstract: Purpose: This research seeks to understand the key success factors for strategy implementation by boutique hotels from the perspectives of managers of boutique hotels in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Seventeen factors are investigated constituting five dimensions. Three of these may be categorized as internal process (strategy formulation, systematic execution, and control and follow-up) and two as actors (management, and corporate governance).
Design/methodology/approach: The research uses a qualitative method. In-depth interviews based on the grounded theory approach recommended by Strauss and Corbin (1998) are conducted with managers of boutique hotels in Chiang Mai. The in-depth interviews attempt to get insights on the key success factors for strategy implementation from the perspectives of the hotel management.
Theoretical implications: This thesis will add to the knowledge on strategy implementation by boutique hotels on the following aspects: 1) key success factors, and 2) a best practice framework.
Practical implications: This research aims to provide managerial guidelines for strategy implementation by boutique hotels on the following aspects: 1) key success factors, and 2) a best practice framework. The guidelines may be applicable to the boutique hotel sector in other locations provided their settings and characteristics resemble those of Chiang Mai.
Originality/value: To the author’s knowledge, this thesis is the first empirical study on key success factors for strategy implementation by boutique hotels in Southeast Asia.
