Abstract: Inchcape NRG H.K. Limited has been using outdoor management development programmes since 1995 but there was no systematic evaluation on the effectiveness of these programmes. This paper evaluates the effectiveness of a recent outdoor management development programme in terms of its objectives: leadership, teamwork, communication and risk-taking. The results show that participants gained learning experience in teamwork, risk-taking and leadership but not communication. There was also increase in the participants' self-awareness and self-confidence three months after the training. Apart from this, there was no significant change in the participants' job behaviour. To tackle the problem of transferring learning from the training programme to the workplace, it is suggested that the Company should: 1) ensure the objectives are based on identified needs; 2) design tailor-made training programme; 3) enhance pre-course communication with the participants; 4) strike a balance between outdoor activities and review process; 5) maintain programme flexibility; 6) obtain feedback from participants; 7) follow-up on participants' action plans; and 8) create supportive workplace environment.
