|Title:||Flexural assessment of concrete-filled steel tube with octagonal section||en_US|
|Abstract:||The flexural assessment of concrete-filled steel tube with octagonal cross section is investigated in this dissertation. A total of eight specimens are carried out in the experimental test under monotonic and cyclic lateral loading, including two hollow steel tube specimens and six concrete-filled steel tube specimens. The nominal steel yield strength of all the octagonal steel tubes is 355 MPa, and the infilled concrete includes three different grades: C30, C60, C90. Three coupon tests for the S355 steel are conducted to obtain the steel property and the stress - strain curve of the steel. Eighteen concrete standard tests are carried out with nine concrete cubes tests and nine concrete cylinder test to obtain the concrete property and some basic material parameters of the concrete. In order to assess the flexural behavior of the octagonal concrete-filled steel tube, a number of strain gauges and linear variable displacement transformers (LVSTs) are used to obtain required data to derive the key parameter of the specimens, including effective flexural stiffness, maximum moment, energy dissipation. The test results indicate that the octagonal concrete-filled steel tubes have a good ductility and ability of energy dissipation. Then the comparison of test results with predictions from EN 1994-1-1 is made to assess the applicability of extending EN 1994-1-1 to the design of octagonal concrete-filled steel tubes. The results indicate that EN 1994-1-1 predict the effective flexural stiffness of octagonal concrete-filled steel tube quite well, and the design value of it is quite conservative in the moment capacity. Finally, the finite element software ABAQUS is used subsequently to simulate the experimental tests. The results obtained from the ABAQUS are similar to the experimental tests.||en_US|
