Behaviour of concrete columns partially confined with FRPen_US
Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) has been universally adopted to reinforce concrete structures as a replacement of steel. Previous studies have indicated that concrete column confined with FRP jackets or FRP bars has a good performance in ultimate strength and ductility contrasted with corresponding unconstrained concrete. For economic and fire resistance considerations, an alternative technique of confining concrete with FRP straps is introduced and proved to be promising. Nonetheless, the understanding and available model on partially wrapping schemes are quite limited. In the dissertation, an experimental program is designed to investigate the behaviour of concrete columns constrained with FRP straps in the form of discrete hoops or a continuous spiral. The spacing of the FRP straps is large and the width of the strap is narrow, which can well simulate the confinement effect of reinforcing stirrups and spirals in conventional RC structures with transverse FRP reinforcement. The experiment results are contrasted with the prediction from Teng et al's model (2009) to evaluate the applicability of this model. It is proved that Teng's model predicts the ultimate axial stress well, while it is not exact in the prediction of the ultimate axial strain. A modified equation is thus proposed to improve the accuracy and applicability of this model in concrete columns partially confined with FRP straps.en_US
