Abstract: | Atmospheric aerosols have an important influence on climate change, atmospheric visibility, global radiation balance and human health. Isoprene is the most abundant non-methane volatile organic compound (VOC) in the world. It can react with nitrate radicals (NO₃) and ozone (O₃) and the reaction produces oxygen-containing volatile organic compounds (OVOCs) which contribute the formation of aerosols. A series of experiments were carried out in a smog chamber in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). The products are the C1-C4 compounds mainly from the reaction of isoprene with O₃ and the primarily OVOCs detected are CH₂O, CH₂O₂, C₃H₆O, C₂H₄O₂ and C₄H₆O, C₃H₆O₂ and C₄H₆O₂. The C₅H₆O is one of the products of isoprene+NO₃ reaction. Furthermore, controlling NO₂ concentration and relative humidity can estimate their impacts on the formation of OVOCs. Except for formaldehyde, the higher the concentration of NO₂ is, the lower OVOCs yield is and the total yields of the OVOCs are 23.26%, 21.53% and 17.89% when the NO₂ concentration are 30ppb, 50ppb and 220ppb, respectively. In addition to CH₂O and CH₂O₂, when the relative humidity is 10% , 25% and 45%, the higher the relative humidity is, the higher yield of OVOCs is and the total yields of C₃H₆O, C2H₄O₂, C₄H₆O, C₃H₆O₂ and C₄H₆O₂ are 19.81%, 30.48%, 36.18% and 32.47% when the relative humidity are 10%, 25%, 45%, and 65%, respectively. On the contrary, the higher the relative humidity is, the yield of CH₂O detected is lower because of the solubility. |
