Abstract: | Motor powered Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in commercial market is booming in many civilian applicational areas such as aerial photography, Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions [1], 3D mapping [2], remote sensing. Although UAV has had been developed for serval years, practical transportation and goods delivery application is still far away from practice today due to the spectrum of technical difficulties: range and endurance limitation, airworthiness proof. Moreover, Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) UAV has becoming the most interesting topic to study in recent years. It seems the way out from this deadlock because VTOL manages to utilize the aerodynamic forces to lift the aircraft while cursing which contribute to range or endurance per power consumption. However, the efficiency and performance of a VTOL is seriously affected by the propellers chosen. In general, fixed pitch propellers for multi-rotor can be selected for VTOL, but they are not good at fixed-wing mode flying at all. This paper is to investigate benefits of a variable pitch propeller when comparing with a fixed pitch propeller. Hopefully, variable pitch propeller can offer higher efficiency than fixed pitch propeller in some conditions. |
