Changing times, changing duties : skills centres teachers adjusting to changeen_US
In recent years, Hong Kong has seen substantial changes in its economic structure. The manufacturing industry has rapidly downsized and, in relation to the manufacturing sector, the service industry has become more dominant. In response to the changing economy, the programmes offered by the Vocational Training Council (VTC) have changed too. Some programmes were abolished, others were modified, and new ones were introduced. To cope with these changes it has been not uncommon for teachers in the Skills Centres of the VTC to be redeployed to pick up responsibility for teaching subjects in disciplines that are new to them. These teachers were originally employed to teach in a discipline of the manufacturing sector. As time changed, they were required to changed to teach in a new discipline of the commercial sector or the service sector. This qualitative case study explores the experiences, issues of concern or problems faced by a sample of the redeployed Skills Centres teachers from the time they were made aware of their redeployment, through their retraining and into the period of taking up their new duties. The study also documents the redeployed teachers' advice to colleagues who may face similar changes as well as their recommendations to their managers who may initiate further redeployment.en_US
