| Abstract: | Purpose - This paper examines the relationship of the EO-firm performance with the interplay of exchanges through ambidextrous strategies of product explorative and exploitative activities in technology innovations in the context of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) dealing with the Industrial 4.0 transformation. The selected moderators will take into consideration both the internal and external factors offering different influence and relationship under different conditions and scenarios. Design - A conceptual framework demonstrates the significance of EO as a critical component in improving the firm performance of SMEs, which will be mediated by the ambidextrous strategies adopted by the SMEs. This has been accomplished by drawing on the data collected from the members of SMEs of Singapore. A case study of a manufacturing SME established since 1961 will also be presented and analysed to showcase its success owing to the ambidextrous strategies adopted by it from 2008 to 2017 to maximise the data validity and as well as serve the theoretical interests of academics. Research limitations/implications - This study further attempts in contributing to the literature by incorporating both product exploration and exploitation strategies in technological innovation as mediators to EO-performance. Investigate the potentially differential effect of Innovativeness relative to other EO dimensions to the firm behaviour towards Product Exploration. The limitations of the study include that only the owner of SMEs or senior management team member of the firm has been surveyed in this study. Practical implications - This paper introduces the positive effects of adopting both the exploration and exploitation for enhancing the firm performance through continuous strategic renewal to be ready for Industrial 4.0. The introduction of a new introductory framework for Industrial 4.0, and the redefining selected terms of responses versus alerts relevant to the latest tools and techniques. The purpose is to allow Singapore SMEs to have an elementary introduction on the potential benefits and gaining a better understanding of Industrial 4.0. |
