Abstract: This project explains the usefulness of the concept courseware generator. It proposes two methods of implementation of a courseware generator that is suitable for Hong Kong secondary schools. If the courseware generator is successfully implemented workload among Hong Kong secondary school teachers in authoring courseware will be greatly reduced. The first approach applies to the situation that teachers author web based courseware for their students. A database is used to store URLs of courseware. A teacher inputs the specifications of a course for a student to query the database. The database returns relevant URLs of courseware. Also, a simple method to declare courseware that is available is proposed so that the courseware can be searched and recorded in the database. The second approach attempts to find relevant Web pages from the WWW and then modify the Web pages into courseware according to educational theories. Automatic text categorization techniques can be used to pin point a relevant Web page. This alleviates the problems of common search engines that return a large number of Web pages. Modifications of web pages include the following: addition of learning objectives, problems and solutions, and combining two web pages at a time to form a single teaching unit. If a web page is modified, its contents will be similar to that of a textbook.
