Outsourcing relationship of freight forwarders in Hong Kongen_US
This paper reviews the outsourcing relationship of freight forwarding industry in Hong Kong. This dissertation describes the competitive environment and some special characteristics of freight forwarding industry in Hong Kong. These industry backgrounds are the drivers for the phenomenon of outsourcing in Hong Kong freight forwarding industry. It also draws on a number of literatures which covering the theoretical aspects of definition of outsourcing, reasons of outsourcing and the measurement of outsourcing relationship. A survey by questionnaire across a convenience sampling of Hong Kong freight forwarders was undertaken. The analyses of data were taken and a number of conclusions were drawn. It revealed that outsourcing and offering logistics supplementary services have already been very common in the industry. The survey also investigated the factors which influencing the outsourcing relationship between freight forwarders and outsourcing services providers. Certainly, in Hong Kong, most of the freight forwarders are still considered the immediate benefit received from outsourcing as their major reasons of making such a decision. However, from the survey, it also revealed that the concerns of strategic reasons and cost reasons of outsourcing would be one of the predictors of the outsourcing relationship. That is, the more the forwarder concerns about the strategic factors and the lesser it concerns about the cost factors, the higher will be the scores of the outsourcing relationship. Another predictor would be the exit items which are related to the competitive environment of the service providers. When the service providers are under a less favourable environment, the scores of outsourcing relationship would also be higher. The result provides some guidelines for the studies of outsourcing relationship. Also, it provides certain implications to the management of freight forwarders who aims to develop a long term relationship with it services providers.en_US
