| Abstract: | Although social enterprises are still a new phenomenon in Hong Kong, the development of social enterprises in Hong Kong in the past decade has been quite rapid. The institutional evolution and government policies appear to have had a great influence on the development of social enterprises. According to incomplete statistics, there are currently more than 500 social enterprises, of which about 70% are social enterprises established by charities through government funding, and the rest are privately funded. Solving problems of structural unemployment, mitigating poverty, inadequacy of traditional policies and increasing demand for social services are the main reasons for developing social enterprises. Social enterprises are expected to help disadvantaged groups to empower their potential, become self-reliant and reintegrate into the community. This qualitative research is an exploratory study of social inclusion through employment of disadvantaged groups in social enterprises in Hong Kong by analyzing the nature of their operations in the organizations in the institutional context and their perceived social impact. This is a practitioner research study that aims to understand the social integration of employment for disadvantaged groups through social enterprises in Cafe de Verseau. Seven case studies highlight the issues that need to be addressed to better utilize the social enterprise model for the development of social work practice. The findings identify a number of strategies that can be used to facilitate social workers to enhance their professional stance when facing issues in social enterprises. These include: "the research findings reveal that social enterprise is a new social work intervention", "this study emphasizes, through a practitioner research study, the understanding of social integration for employment of disadvantaged groups through social enterprises", and "realizes the nature and importance of the developing effect of social enterprises in Hong Kong". The value of this research for social work was through an analysis of the social integration of employment of disadvantaged groups through the social enterprise Cafe de Verseau. It thus aimed to help disadvantaged groups integrate with the community by shaping future development of social enterprises. |
