The role of government in planning towards sustainable tourism development in Hong Kongen_US
The purpose of this research is to understand the role of government planning towards sustainable tourism development in the HKSAR, China. After years of growth, tourism faced serious problems and started to decline in Hong Kong. Tourism is a significant industry in Hong Kong. Every year, it generates revenue for the Government and creates jobs for the economy, more attention should be given to this important industry. Under the British Administration, the Government adopted a laissez faire policy. That means it does not favor any industry and there is a lack of planning from the Government in all sectors. In the past, tourism development was led by private sectors such as Cathay Pacific, Ocean Park, and hotel developers. As tourism industry is evolving, it is important that the Government should start to play an active role in tourism development. The HKSAR Government should start to have an overall planning in tourism development. Qualitative method has been used to collect data on government, tourism organizations, and sustainable development. The data is categorized to form patterns and qualitative analysis is used. In this research, different dimensions in tourism are investigated. The major finding is that tourism should not just rely on private sector, government involvement is also important to achieve the goals and objectives. Traditional hardware planning is not good enough, tourism development should include economic, social, cultural , and environmental attributes. Today and into the future, overall planning from the government is necessary to achieve sustainable tourism development in Hong Kong.en_US
