Abstract: It is significant to reduce energy consumption and also have a better living environment in the high-rise buildings in modern cities. The simulation predictions show that utilizing natural ventilation could help reduce air-conditioning energy use in the flats by about 30%~40% (Omrani, Garcia-Hansen, Capra, & Drogemuller, 2017). Ventilation is needed to solve the critical issues above by providing fresh air for metabolism and maintaining good indoor air quality for hygiene. Natural ventilation always provides good air quality for building occupants without any energy consumption. Natural ventilation is effective by design of windows in most forms of high-rise residential buildings. All the parameters of window characteristics including types, opening angles, positions, height, and dimension can affect ventilation performance (Aflaki, Mahyuddin, Al-Cheikh Mahmoud, & Baharum, 2015). However, in high-density city sites such as Hong Kong and Taiwan (Alizadeh & Sadrameli, 2018; Toe, Sugiyama, Yasufuku, & Kubota, 2014), the position of cross ventilation is difficult to achieve. On account of the typical layout of the normal residential building units, the ventilation mode usage of single-side ventilation is more widespread. A transom window, in architecture, is a transverse horizontal structural beam or bar, or a crosspiece separating a door from a window above it. However, the current study which using a transom window to improving natural ventilation is especially limited. Considering all the aspects, it is proposed to use the transom window (a window can be opened on the door) to help achieve cross ventilation in high rise and high-density residential building units in Hong Kong. The CFD simulation is used to illustrate more transom window parameters in improving natural ventilation performance. A detailed and versatile sensitivity analysis of the effects of these parameters on the simulation results is significant to conduct the implementation and evaluation of future CFD studies.
