|Abstract:||Rapid technology advancement further opens up humans' awareness of their physical and living environment. The measurement of physical parameters such as air pollutant concentration, humidity and temperature levels shows the habitability of a living space. High humidity level creates a habitable context for air-borne diseases to spread and fungus mold to develop on walls and ceiling areas, attributing to the harmful effects of contaminated air on human health. The consequence of exposure in a home with a high humidity level exceeding 60 percent can deregulate body temperature, which causes residents to become sluggish and to feel foggy or to cause fainting. Not only does moisture content in air contain potential health risks, but also the mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets, infamously recognized as PM2.5 (the size of micrometers) can cause insidious damage to our respiratory system by living within a not-so-well-ventilated space. It's unrealistic to install a high-performance ventilation unit that is capable of detecting changes in air and smartly adjusting the air flow rate and temperature level for residential purposes. Although there are home intelligent systems that claim to satiate the needs for air cycling, temperature and humidity monitoring and control, equipping such a system can be costly after factoring in consultation and labor costs. As many electronic parts and communication technologies are within easy reach, this research paper seeks to build a low-budget home environment monitoring and control system capable of sensing home temperature, humidity, and air quality and offering control options over home appliances. This smart home air quality system will be centered on a microcontroller board Arduino Mega and a 2G communication module GSM SIM900 to accomplish a simple home environment monitoring and control operation.|
