A study on the effect of different types of window opening on natural ventilation at a single-sided ventilated roomen_US
Natural Ventilation is an essential factor for designing urban buildings in Hong Kong. It can provide better indoor air quality and achieve energy conservation. Window opening is an important factor to natural ventilation performance. This study aims at analyzing and comparing the ventilation performance of single hung window, top hung window and end-slider window, which are commonly found in Hong Kong residential units. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted to investigate the effect of three window types on ventilation to a single-side ventilated room in a multistory building. The effect of opening angles or areas to the natural ventilation was also examined. This simulation finds that the increasing rate of air change per hour (ACH) is much higher when the opening angles of single hung type and top hung type are small. The ACH does not increase when the windows are nearly fully opened. This simulation also shows that top hung type has better ventilation performance than single-hung type and end-slider type, since top hung type can redirect the airflow into the room in the airflow pattern near the wall of building.en_US
